Microplastics Formation

In the last post, there was a lot of information, we talked about what microplastics are and some potential effects of them being in our environment but we didn't address where they came from. Here we'll talk about how they're formed and some easy steps that you can take to stop them from generating.

Microplastics are formed from a few main sources:

Synthetics textiles release microplastics because they cannot withstand the mechanical and chemical stresses during a washing process for extended cycles. The fibers begin to break off and detach from the textiles. Since the fibers are very small, they can pass through wastewater treatment plants and reach the ocean.

Cigarette filters are tightly packed synthetic plastic fibers that when tossed into the environment start to erode. As the filter begins to degrade microplastics are released into the environment. Yet another reason smoking is bad!

As plastics litter is left in the environment for an extended period of time it begins to degrade from the elements. As it degrades microplastics can be released into the environment.

The same idea is seen in tires. As they are worn by driving or being left exposed to the elements, the rubber begins to wear and degrade and release microplastics.

Other sources not shown are from microbeads in facewash and other personal care products, road markings and from manufacturing waste.

While microplastics come from a lot of sources, there are many ways we as consumers can prevent them from entering the environment. Buying clothing made from cotton that is not cheaply made or synthetic can help reduce microplastics. While this type of clothing is more expensive and not an option for everyone, it does not degrade as easily and will likely last longer than cheaply made synthetic alternatives. If you smoke, making sure you dispose of your cigarette butts properly instead of just throwing them on the ground will also reduce microplastic pollution. Also, ensuring that you are recycling properly, not littering, and making environmentally conscious choices like eliminating single use plastics from your routine are great ways to benefit the environment and reduce microplastics pollution.

Unfortunately, all cars need tires but if possible choosing to use public transportation, riding your bike or walking will help reduce pollution from tires.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments! I'll be posting the final survey soon
